Construction Images- Westfield Sydney

Here are some images from this week showing the completion of the cladding on 100 Market Street (100M) and the near completion of the 100M entry cowl.  There are also some images of the current work on the Pitt Street Mall and some images of the near completion of the adjacent site 420 George (old Mid-City Centre).


There are also some images of the new awning to be used on the retail portion of Westfield Sydney (designed by JWA of Melbourne, it’s made of fritted glass and bent stainless steel). There is a lot of fritted glass on this project.

Pitt Street Mall Refurbishment

Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall is currently having a major refurbishment. This is to complement the adjacent rebuilding of the Mid-City Centre (420 George) and Westfield Sydney. The Mall refurbishment is meant to be finished by October 2010, in time for the opening of Stage One of Westfield Sydney.

The main concepts are:

-regrade the existing surface to fall into the centre (as opposed to the sides, as this once was a street). This is to evoke the Tank Stream, Sydney’s original water source. The Tank Stream still runs close to here, under Sydney Central Plaza (Myers).

-install new paving, street furniture, etc, etc.

-install new feature catenary lighting (with supporting wires a bit like tram wires).

-retain existing trees . This was seen as very unwise by arborists, as the existing trees are planted in concrete drums (bad 80s practise) that starve the trees of oxygen. This is why they are so unhealthy. However, the drums do stop the trees from disrupting underground services, which is probably why they’ve kept them (the drums should be enlarged and adequately drained). Continue reading

First tenants cut deals on new tower- 420 George

PITT STREET MALL is set to become the latest office hub for the CBD with leasing under way at the new $280 million skyscraper at 420 George Street, which is due to be open for business by July.
Although no anchor tenant has been confirmed for the 38-storey office tower, it is understood State Street financial group is close to signing up about 10,000 square metres, with about 30 per cent of the rent being offered as a free incentive.

Office trust analysts say the deals are consistent with conditions in the Sydney CBD office market, where about 7 per cent of space is vacant.

It is also speculated that Westfield remains keen on building a second tower in its $700 million Pitt Street Mall project, although the group has so far said it’s still only under review. Continue reading
